About this course

Computer games technology is a discipline concerned with the engineering side of game development: the programming, mathematics, and systems architecture that make games run. While game design focuses on what a game does and how it feels to play, games technology focuses on how it works, covering real-time rendering, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, networking, audio systems, and the architecture of modern game engines. It is a technically demanding field that draws on computer science, mathematics, and the specific engineering challenges of producing interactive experiences that run in real time.

At Abertay University this four-year full-time programme is taught at an institution with a long-standing and internationally recognised reputation in game education. The degree focuses on developing highly skilled games programmers with deep knowledge of the engines and hardware that power modern games. You will study the mathematical and computational foundations of real-time graphics, AI programming, physics, and engine architecture, developing the technical fluency to contribute at a high level to games development teams.

The degree includes a year abroad, giving you an international academic and professional perspective on the global games industry. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the technically demanding nature of entry to this programme.

You will develop strong programming skills, mathematical reasoning, and the specialist technical knowledge that games studios look for in technical hires.

Graduates go on to work as games programmers, engine developers, technical artists, AI developers, graphics engineers, and physics programmers at games studios, virtual reality companies, simulation organisations, and in related fields. Postgraduate study in games technology, computer science, or simulation is a natural next step for those with research or specialisation ambitions.

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” th…

Genuinely worthwhile
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the career fair connections with top tech employers are genuinely valuable. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the cit…
