Computer Engineering
Computer engineering occupies a distinctive position among the computing disciplines. At Queen's University Belfast, this five-year MEng programme, which includes a year in industry, is one of the few research-led degrees in the university that combines the design of both electronic hardware and software. You will study digital circuit design, computer architecture, embedded systems, operating systems, and the software engineering principles that bring complex systems to life. The collaborative, practically oriented nature of the programme means you work on real engineering challenges, developing the judgment and technical range that industry requires.
The year in industry provides sustained professional experience in a computing or technology organisation, significantly strengthening your transition into the workplace. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.
Graduates of computer engineering programmes work in embedded systems design, chip design and semiconductor development, hardware-software integration, robotics, automotive technology, aerospace systems, telecommunications, medical devices, and defence. The dual expertise in hardware and software is a genuine differentiator in the job market, as many of the most complex and high-value engineering roles require exactly this breadth. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate research or professional accreditation toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with relevant professional engineering bodies.
