About this course

Computer engineering is the discipline that bridges electronic hardware and software, combining the physical design of computing systems with the programming and algorithmic thinking that determines what those systems can do. It is at the heart of every digital device people interact with daily, from smartphones and games consoles to medical devices, surveillance systems, and the embedded computers in vehicles and industrial equipment. As computing becomes ever more deeply embedded in every aspect of modern life, the need for engineers who understand both the hardware and software dimensions of computing systems continues to grow.

At Queen's University Belfast this four-year full-time MEng undergraduate masters programme is one of the few research-led computing degrees in Queen's that includes the design of both electronic hardware and software. You will study the principles of digital electronics, computer architecture, programming, operating systems, embedded systems, and signal processing, developing both the theoretical foundations and the practical skills to design and build real computing systems. The masters-level structure means the programme goes beyond what a standard BEng covers, engaging with research and advanced topics in the later years and preparing graduates for roles at the frontier of the field.

The collaborative and practical character of the programme means you will work on hands-on design projects throughout, developing the engineering judgement and problem-solving skills that professional practice requires.

Graduates move into careers in embedded systems engineering, semiconductor design, firmware development, systems engineering, telecommunications, defence electronics, and computing research. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the relevant professional bodies. Postgraduate study is an option for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
