About this course

Computer and internet engineering is the discipline concerned with designing and building the hardware and software systems that underpin connected computing. Where computer science focuses primarily on computation and software, computer and internet engineering integrates this with electronics and the engineering of physical systems, focusing on the technologies that enable modern mobile communication, internet infrastructure, embedded computing and the connected devices that make up an increasingly networked world. It is a field where depth in electronics and communication engineering meets software and systems expertise.

At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time BEng programme is designed with direct input from industry, reflecting Surrey's strong track record in engineering education with close industry collaboration and placement experience at its core. The programme builds a strong grounding in computer engineering, electronics and the specialist skills needed to work at the forefront of mobile and internet technology. Surrey is located near several major technology employers in the South East, which supports the industry connections that inform and enrich the programme.

You will study digital systems, electronics, programming, computer architecture, signal processing, communication systems, networks, embedded systems design and the mathematical foundations that underpin engineering analysis. Practical laboratory work and design projects develop your ability to build and test real systems alongside the theoretical understanding required to engineer them well.

Graduates go on to careers in telecommunications, mobile and wireless systems, internet infrastructure, embedded systems, semiconductor design, defence, aerospace and technology companies developing connected devices and communication platforms. The combination of electronic and software engineering is valued across many industries where the two disciplines increasingly converge. Professional qualification with the Institution of Engineering and Technology is a common development route, and postgraduate study in communications or systems engineering is available for those who want to specialise further.
