Community Education

Community education is the practice of supporting learning, development, and empowerment among people in their own communities and social contexts, rather than in formal classroom settings. It is grounded in values of participation, social justice, and respect for the knowledge that people bring from their own lives. Practitioners work with individuals and groups across a wide range of settings, from youth work and adult learning to community arts, family support, and informal education in parks, community centres, and online spaces.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme prepares you for professional practice in community education and related fields. You will explore the philosophical and sociological foundations of community education, theories of informal and non-formal learning, group work and facilitation, community development approaches, and the policy frameworks within which practitioners operate. Practical placements are central to the programme, giving you sustained experience in real community settings where you develop the relational skills, cultural sensitivity, and professional judgement that the work demands.

You will also engage with questions of power, inequality, and social change, learning to work alongside communities rather than simply providing services to them.

Graduates from community education programmes qualify for professional registration with professional bodies in youth work and community learning and development, opening doors to roles as community learning and development workers, youth workers, family learning coordinators, community arts practitioners, and adult education facilitators. Many also work in local authorities, housing associations, charities, and third-sector organisations. Postgraduate study in community education, social work, adult learning, and social policy is a natural progression for those who wish to move into research, management, or specialist practice.
