Community Education

Community education is a discipline rooted in the belief that education does not end at the school gate and that meaningful learning, participation, and social change happen most powerfully when people have agency in shaping their own development and that of their communities. It draws on traditions of adult education, youth work, and community development to ask how professionals can support individuals and communities to identify their own goals, access learning, and bring about change. At its core it is a values-led practice, grounded in respect for people's dignity, capacity, and right to determine their own futures.

At the University of Dundee this four-year full-time programme develops the knowledge and professional skills needed to work in community and youth settings across Scotland and beyond. You will study the theory and history of community education alongside the practical skills of facilitation, group work, community development, and professional relationship-building. The degree draws on the traditions of community development and youth work, preparing you to work with individuals and communities facing a wide range of challenges and opportunities.

Work-based learning is integral to the programme, with placement experience in community settings providing the opportunity to apply your learning in real professional contexts throughout your studies. The typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the academic and personal qualities expected of students entering the profession.

You will develop the reflective practice, communication skills, and ethical awareness that community education demands, as well as a thorough grounding in the policy and legislative frameworks governing community learning and development in Scotland.

Graduates go on to work as community educators, youth workers, community development workers, family learning practitioners, and adult educators, in local authorities, voluntary organisations, housing associations, and community groups. Postgraduate study in community education, social work, or public policy is also a natural progression.
