Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying

Commercial management and quantity surveying are the disciplines that keep construction projects financially and contractually on track. Quantity surveyors are the financial experts of the built environment, responsible for estimating costs, managing budgets, procuring contracts, and ensuring that projects are delivered to quality standards and within agreed parameters. Commercial managers operate at a similar level, overseeing the commercial relationships and financial performance of complex construction programmes.

Both roles require a combination of technical knowledge, financial acumen, and strong communication skills.

At Loughborough University, you will study the financial, legal, and managerial dimensions of construction and project delivery. The programme covers cost planning and estimating, procurement and contract law, project management, building technology, and the economics of the construction industry. You will develop the quantitative skills needed to analyse costs and produce estimates, alongside the professional knowledge needed to manage contracts and relationships effectively.

The programme runs over three years full-time.

Graduates of commercial management and quantity surveying programmes work in construction companies, consultancy practices, property developers, public sector bodies, and infrastructure organisations. The degree provides the foundation for professional accreditation with relevant bodies in the built environment sector.
