Coaching and Developing Sport

Coaching and developing sport is a discipline rooted in the practical art of helping individuals and teams improve their performance, while also engaging with the organisational and developmental dimensions of sport in communities and institutions. Effective coaching is about much more than technical instruction: it involves building relationships, designing progressive learning environments, adapting to individual needs, and working within the structures of clubs, schools, governing bodies, and local authorities.

The University of the Highlands and Islands offers this programme as a two-year, full-time degree, designed to provide focused and practical preparation for roles in sport coaching and development without the length of a traditional three-year honours programme. The UHI model is particularly well suited to students in Scotland and the Highlands who want to enter the coaching workforce relatively quickly or who are already working in sport and wish to formalise and deepen their understanding. Across the programme you will study coaching theory and practice, examining how different coaching models and communication approaches affect performance and player development at different stages of the pathway.

Sports development introduces the structures and policy frameworks through which sport is organised and resourced at local, regional, and national levels. You will also engage with the physiological and psychological dimensions of sport, developing an evidence-based approach to training prescription and athlete support. Practical placements and applied projects ensure that your learning is grounded in real coaching contexts.

The programme develops the reflective practice, communication skills, and applied knowledge that sport coaches and development officers need in their daily work.

Graduates work in sports coaching across a range of contexts including schools, clubs, community sport trusts, and national governing bodies. Others enter roles in sports development, physical activity promotion, and leisure management. The degree also provides a foundation for further study in sport, coaching science, or physical education.
