Classics/Scottish History

Classics and Scottish history is a combination that spans two very different historical scales and intellectual traditions, connecting the ancient Mediterranean world that shaped Western civilisation with the particular history of one of Europe's most fascinating nations. Classics brings you into contact with the literature, history, art, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome, and offers the possibility of studying Latin and Greek at any level, including from scratch. Scottish history traces Scotland's distinctive political, social, religious, and cultural trajectory from the medieval period to the present.

At the University of Glasgow this four-year, full-time Joint Honours programme develops your engagement with both disciplines within a university that has exceptional strengths in both. You will read ancient texts and engage with classical material culture alongside the study of Scotland's past: its reformation, its union with England, its empire, its Enlightenment, its industrialisation, and its contemporary politics. The two subjects share a concern with how the past is known, and with the relationship between cultural heritage and present-day identity.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and to bring a different academic perspective to your work in both disciplines.

Graduates of classics and Scottish history pursue careers in education, heritage, museums, archives, publishing, broadcasting, the civil service, and cultural organisations. The research and analytical skills both disciplines develop are valued across a wide range of professional contexts.
