Classics and French is a pairing that spans ancient and modern, drawing on two great literary and cultural traditions to develop exceptional range across time, language, and civilisation. Classics encompasses the languages, literatures, history, philosophy, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome. French opens the literature, philosophy, cinema, and cultural history of the French-speaking world from the medieval period to the contemporary.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme gives you the depth to engage with both traditions seriously, including the opportunity to focus on a wide range of topics within French studies, from French comics and song to travel writing, medieval France, and contemporary French history. You will develop proficiency in French to a high level through language and cultural study, while in Classics you may engage with Latin, ancient Greek, ancient history, philosophy, and classical literature. The combination develops an unusual breadth of linguistic and cultural competence alongside the close reading, analytical, and argumentative skills that both disciplines require.
