About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that allows modern society to function: roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment systems, flood defences, and the foundations on which buildings stand. It combines structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials science, and project management to address engineering challenges that range from the design of a single component to the planning of complex infrastructure systems serving millions of people. Civil engineers apply mathematics and physical science to create structures and systems that are safe, durable, economical, and increasingly sustainable.

At Teesside this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who benefit from additional preparation before the main degree, alongside a sandwich year and a work placement that give you substantial industry experience before you graduate. Across the programme you will engage with the design process through sketching, formal engineering drawing, design calculations, and written commentary, progressing to mathematical modelling and simulation of real engineering problems. You will explore structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and materials aspects of civil engineering alongside broader engineering design principles and the tools used in professional practice.

Civil engineering graduates are in consistent demand across a wide range of public and private sector organisations. Structural design, site engineering, infrastructure planning, project management, and environmental engineering are among the most direct career paths. Local authorities, national government agencies, major construction contractors, specialist consultancies, and utilities are all major employers.

Chartered Engineer status, typically pursued with employer support through the Institution of Civil Engineers, is an important professional milestone. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in structural engineering, geotechnics, water management, or construction project management.
