About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline concerned with designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that supports modern society. Roads, bridges, tunnels, flood defences, water treatment systems, railways, and buildings of every kind are all products of civil engineering knowledge and skill. It is one of the oldest of the engineering disciplines, with roots stretching back to the construction of ancient aqueducts and roads, but it remains urgently relevant today as societies face the challenges of renewing ageing infrastructure, adapting to climate change, and building sustainably for the future.

At Coventry University, this four-year, full-time degree with a foundation year is designed for students who need an additional preparatory year before entering the main civil engineering programme. The foundation year builds the mathematical and physical science foundations that engineering study requires, providing the platform needed to engage fully with degree-level material. Through the main programme, you will study structural engineering, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials science, construction management, and sustainability in civil engineering, developing both theoretical understanding and practical design skills.
