About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline that designs, builds, and maintains the physical structures on which modern society depends. Roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply systems, flood defences, coastal infrastructure, and buildings all fall within its scope, and the profession is central to addressing some of the most pressing challenges of the coming decades, including the transition to sustainable infrastructure, urban growth, and climate resilience. Civil engineers must combine rigorous technical knowledge with creative problem-solving and an understanding of the social and environmental contexts in which they work.

At the University of Southampton, this five-year full-time BEng programme provides a thorough grounding in civil engineering design and application. The degree begins with a foundation year, which builds the scientific and mathematical preparation needed for degree-level engineering study, before moving through the core engineering content including structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, environmental engineering, and infrastructure design. You will develop both the technical skills to design creative and effective engineering solutions and the professional awareness to implement them in real contexts.

The industrial placement year, which adds a further year of professional experience in industry, means that you will graduate with substantial real-world exposure alongside your academic qualifications, making you a significantly stronger candidate in the graduate job market.

Civil engineering graduates are in demand across a wide range of sectors. Construction and infrastructure, environmental and water engineering, transport planning, geotechnical engineering, offshore engineering, and consulting are all common destinations. The programme's focus on sustainable development means graduates are well positioned for the growing field of green infrastructure.

Many graduates pursue the professional development pathway toward chartered engineer status. Postgraduate study in structural engineering, environmental engineering, transport, or geotechnics provides opportunities for those who wish to specialise.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” go…

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” t…
