About this course

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most socially consequential of all engineering disciplines, responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure on which modern life depends. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment works, flood defences, railways, and the foundations of buildings are all within the civil engineer's domain. It is a discipline that combines structural and geotechnical analysis with hydraulic engineering, environmental considerations, and project management, and it requires the ability to work at every scale from a soil sample to a major transport network.

At the University of Liverpool, this three-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, providing you with the opportunity to study civil engineering in a different national context and to encounter different engineering challenges, design standards, and construction approaches. Liverpool has a well-regarded engineering school with strong connections to the infrastructure and construction industries, and the degree develops both the theoretical foundations and the practical skills that professional civil engineers need. You will study structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, concrete and steel design, environmental engineering, project management, and the use of computing and modelling tools in engineering practice.

Fieldwork and laboratory investigation complement the theoretical curriculum. The year abroad adds international experience and personal adaptability that many employers value.

Civil engineering develops strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, quantitative rigour, and the capacity to work within the practical, regulatory, and financial constraints of real projects.

Graduates enter careers in structural engineering, geotechnical consultancy, transport engineering, water and environmental engineering, project management, and construction management. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers. Postgraduate study in specialist fields such as structural engineering, geotechnics, or environmental engineering is a common further step.
