About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline through which ideas become tangible realities: bridges, roads, flood defences, water treatment works, sustainable housing developments and the foundations that allow cities to grow and communities to function. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and one of the most socially consequential, because the quality of a nation's civil infrastructure directly affects the health, mobility and prosperity of its people. Civil engineers work across structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, environmental engineering, transportation and construction management, integrating multiple disciplines to deliver complex projects safely and sustainably.

London South Bank University's part-time civil engineering programme includes a foundation year, giving students who are building their scientific and mathematical foundations the space to develop before entering the full degree, and a sandwich year with embedded work placement opportunities, providing professional experience alongside the academic content. The part-time structure makes the programme accessible to students who are working in construction or engineering roles and wish to develop formal academic qualifications while continuing to build professional experience. No typical tariff is published for this programme.

You will study structural mechanics, soil mechanics, fluid mechanics, materials science, construction technology and infrastructure design alongside project management, health and safety, sustainable construction and the professional frameworks governing engineering practice. The combination of theoretical content and work placement experience develops both the engineering knowledge and the professional judgement needed to practice effectively. LSBU's location in London gives students access to one of the world's largest civil engineering and construction markets during their studies.

Graduates of civil engineering programmes work in structural and geotechnical consulting, highway and transport engineering, water and environmental engineering, construction project and site management, infrastructure development and public sector engineering. Many pursue Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers. LSBU's strong connections to London's infrastructure and construction sectors and its emphasis on professional preparation support graduates in finding good professional roles.

Postgraduate study in specialist civil engineering areas is available for those seeking further technical depth.
