Civil Engineering and Architecture

Civil engineering and architecture address two sides of the same challenge: creating the built environment that human life depends on. Civil engineering provides the structural and technical knowledge needed to ensure that buildings, bridges, roads, and urban systems are safe, durable, and functional. Architecture brings design intelligence, spatial thinking, and an understanding of how built form shapes human experience, from the functional arrangement of spaces to the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of the structures we inhabit.

Combining the two disciplines produces graduates who can think across the boundary between technical performance and design intention, a skill that is increasingly valuable in a construction industry concerned with sustainability, urban resilience, and the quality of the built environment.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year, full-time programme allows you to specialise in both architecture and urban design and in structural and geomechanical engineering. You will study how structures behave under load, how foundations interact with the ground, and how complex engineering systems are designed and managed. Alongside this, you will develop design skills and an understanding of the urban contexts in which buildings and infrastructure are placed.

The programme builds both the quantitative analytical skills of engineering and the spatial and design intelligence of architecture, preparing you to work at the interface of the two professions. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates of civil engineering and architecture are well positioned across the construction and infrastructure sectors. Careers in structural engineering design, urban planning and design, project management, environmental engineering, and infrastructure development are all accessible. The dual focus is attractive to employers in practices that bring engineering and architecture together, as well as to major contractors, local authorities, and the developers and consultancies reshaping urban environments.

Many graduates pursue further professional qualifications in engineering, while others develop their architectural or urban design practice through postgraduate study.
