About this course

Civil and structural engineering is the oldest and most foundational of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of the built and natural infrastructure on which society depends: bridges, buildings, roads, railways, dams, tunnels, water supply systems, and the coastal and environmental defences that protect communities from floods and erosion. As the world faces the twin imperatives of repairing ageing infrastructure and adapting to climate change, civil and structural engineers have a central and expanding role.

At the University of Sheffield this five-year programme leads to an integrated Masters degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. The foundation year embedded in the programme provides the essential skills and knowledge needed to start the MEng with confidence, making the route accessible to a wider range of students while ensuring that everyone who progresses has a sound scientific and mathematical foundation. Across the degree you will study structures, geotechnics, water engineering and environmental issues, developing both the theoretical understanding of how physical systems behave and the design skills needed to create safe, efficient and sustainable engineering solutions.

The programme includes a year abroad, extending your perspective on different engineering challenges, climates and regulatory environments.

Civil and structural engineering graduates are in sustained demand. The infrastructure, construction, environmental and water industries employ graduates in design, project engineering, site management, structural analysis, environmental assessment, and a wide range of specialist roles. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers, which provides recognition of professional competence and supports career progression.

Postgraduate study in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport, water engineering, or sustainability is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into research and academic roles.
