Chinese and International Communication

Chinese and international communication is a degree that combines one of the world's most strategically important languages with the professional communication skills needed to operate effectively in global and multicultural environments. Chinese (Mandarin) is spoken by more people than any other language on Earth and is the language of one of the world's most consequential economies and political actors. International communication encompasses the theory and practice of communicating across national, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, including intercultural communication, media, public relations, and professional communication in global contexts.

At the University of Westminster, this three-year full-time programme develops your knowledge of the Chinese language and culture alongside your ability to communicate professionally in international settings. You will develop Mandarin proficiency from the foundations of the language through to the level needed to engage with business, media, and professional contexts, studying contemporary Chinese society, politics, and culture alongside your language skills. Your international communication studies will engage you with theories and practices of communication across cultures, media systems, public diplomacy, and professional communication, giving you the frameworks to work effectively in organisations that operate across national and cultural boundaries.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, meaning you will gain direct professional experience and an immersive international dimension before you graduate.

You will develop Mandarin language skills, intercultural communication competence, and the professional versatility to work across a wide range of international contexts.

Graduates go on to careers in international business development, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, diplomacy, education, translation, and any professional role that requires engagement with China or Chinese-speaking communities. Postgraduate study in Chinese studies, international communications, or translation is a well-supported route.
