Chinese and International Business
Chinese and international business is a degree that prepares you specifically for the complex realities of operating across national and cultural borders in a world where China plays an increasingly central commercial, financial and political role. Chinese, spoken by more people than any other language, is both a significant professional asset and a window into a cultural and civilisational tradition that shapes how business, politics and social life are conducted across China and much of East and Southeast Asia. International business provides the conceptual and practical frameworks for understanding how firms operate across markets, how global trade and investment work, and how organisations navigate different legal, regulatory and cultural environments.
At the University of Westminster this three-year, full-time programme develops your Chinese language skills alongside a thorough grounding in international business management, covering areas such as global strategy, international finance, cross-cultural management, marketing, supply chains and the business environment of different regions. You will study Chinese from a structured programme designed to build competence progressively, and you will engage with Chinese business culture, society and contemporary affairs as well as the language itself. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you direct experience of operating in Chinese-speaking or internationally diverse professional environments before graduation.
Graduates pursue careers in international trade and commerce, financial services with China exposure, consultancy, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, multinational companies, and the growing number of British organisations with significant China operations or partnerships. The combination of Mandarin language ability and international business knowledge is a genuine differentiator in the graduate labour market. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in Chinese, international business, international relations or area studies.
