Children and Young People

Children and Young People with an Early Years focus is a programme of professional study concerned with the development, wellbeing, learning, and rights of children from birth through to young adulthood, with particular attention to the early years period that is so decisive for long-term outcomes. It draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education, social policy, and child health to develop practitioners who understand the whole child, the contexts in which children grow up, and the professional responsibilities that come with working alongside vulnerable and developing individuals.

At the University of Derby, this part-time programme is designed for flexibility, allowing you to develop your understanding and practice-based knowledge alongside existing work and personal commitments. This is particularly relevant for students who are already working in early years settings and want to develop the theoretical grounding and academic credential that complements their practical experience. You will study child development theory, play and learning, safeguarding, inclusive practice, family partnerships, and the policy and regulatory frameworks that govern provision for young children and young people.

Graduates of Children and Young People programmes work across the full range of services concerned with children's welfare and development: nurseries, children's centres, schools, social care, health visiting, family support, youth work, and the voluntary and community sector. Many use the qualification as a foundation for further professional training in teaching, social work, early years leadership, or educational psychology. The depth of knowledge about child development and the professional skills the programme develops are relevant and valued across any field of practice with children and families.
