Childhood & Youth and Religion Theology & Spirituality

Childhood and Youth combined with Religion, Theology and Spirituality is a degree that examines two of the most fundamental dimensions of human social life: the experiences and circumstances of children and young people, and the role of faith, belief, and spiritual practice in shaping individuals, communities, and societies. Childhood and Youth is an inherently multidisciplinary field, drawing on sociology, history, social policy, cultural studies, and psychology to examine the lives of children and young people in the UK and globally, including the institutions, policies, and cultural contexts that shape their experience. Religion, Theology and Spirituality asks how human beings seek meaning and community through faith and spiritual practice, engaging with the major world religions alongside contemporary forms of spirituality.

At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year, full-time degree brings these two subjects together in ways that have genuine practical as well as intellectual coherence: many of the most important settings in which children and young people encounter support and challenge are shaped by religious traditions, community organisations, and questions of values and meaning. The programme includes a sandwich year, work placements, and the option of a year abroad, all of which give you the opportunity to situate your academic learning in real professional and international contexts.

Graduates of this combined degree are well prepared for careers in youth work, social care, education, community development, chaplaincy, faith-based organisations, international development, and the charity sector. The skills in critical analysis, ethical reasoning, and cross-cultural understanding that you develop are valued across many professional fields. Postgraduate study in childhood studies, social work, theology, religious education, or youth work provides routes to further specialisation or professional qualification.
