Childhood Studies

Childhood studies is an interdisciplinary field that takes children's lives, experiences and rights seriously as subjects for rigorous academic enquiry. Rather than treating childhood simply as a phase of development toward adulthood, the discipline examines childhood as a social and cultural construction that varies across historical periods, cultures and social circumstances, and it asks what this means for how we understand and work with children and young people. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of children's wellbeing, identity and development while preparing you to work directly with children or to contribute to the policy, advocacy and research that shapes their experiences.

You will engage with sociological, psychological, legal and educational perspectives on childhood, studying theories of child development alongside the social structures and inequalities that affect children's lives. Topics include children's rights, safeguarding, family structure and diversity, poverty, disability, education policy and the global dimensions of childhood. The programme develops both analytical and applied skills, preparing you to think critically about received wisdom on childhood while also developing the professional competencies that working with children and young people requires.

Research methods are embedded across the curriculum. A typical tariff of around 136 points is expected.

Graduates pursue careers in social work, early years education, children's services, youth work, family support, charities and NGOs working with children, safeguarding roles and policy research. The degree provides a foundation for postgraduate training in social work, education, child psychology or public health, all of which require further qualifications for full professional practice. Essex's particular emphasis on rights and advocacy also prepares graduates well for roles in children's rights organisations and related policy environments.
