About this course

Chemistry with medicinal chemistry combines the core discipline of chemistry with a focused application in the design and development of pharmaceutical compounds. Medicinal chemistry is the science of creating molecules that can interact with biological systems in therapeutically useful ways, drawing on organic synthesis, pharmacology, biochemistry and molecular biology to understand how structure determines function and how drugs can be optimised for efficacy, selectivity and safety. It lies at the heart of the pharmaceutical industry and is one of the most direct routes from fundamental chemistry to a tangible impact on human health.

At the University of Southampton you will study this four-year full-time MChem programme, building across the degree from strong foundations to specialist depth. In your first two years you will establish a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, developing the laboratory skills, mathematical confidence and conceptual understanding that all of chemistry rests on. In your third year you will study core chemistry alongside specialist topics in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis, deepening your knowledge of the techniques and thinking used to design and make biologically active molecules.

The fourth year typically involves a substantial research project, giving you experience of working at the frontiers of the discipline.
