About this course

Chemistry is the science of matter at the molecular level: it explains why water freezes, how drugs interact with the body, what holds materials together, and how the atmosphere responds to industrial emissions. It underpins medicine, materials science, food production, environmental science, and energy technology, making it one of the most foundational and practically important of the natural sciences. This four-year programme at the University of Plymouth includes a foundation year specifically designed to build the mathematical skills, scientific writing, and independent study habits you need to thrive at degree level.

The foundation year introduces you to major global environmental challenges and the role chemistry plays in addressing them, while developing a more reflective and self-managed approach to learning. As you move into the main degree you will study organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry in depth, covering the structures of molecules, the mechanisms of chemical reactions, thermodynamics, spectroscopy, and laboratory techniques. The programme builds from foundational principles toward more advanced and applied topics, with practical laboratory work central throughout, giving you the experimental and analytical skills that define a chemist's professional toolkit.

Chemistry graduates are equipped for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in materials development, food science, environmental consultancy, chemical manufacturing, analytical laboratories, and research.
