About this course

Chemistry is the science of matter and transformation, investigating the composition, properties, and reactions of substances from the simplest atoms through to the most complex biological molecules. It is a central science that underpins biology, physics, medicine, and materials science, and it is directly responsible for the development of pharmaceuticals, new materials, clean energy technologies, agricultural chemicals, and the analytical methods that allow us to detect and measure substances in the environment and in the human body. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Keele includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to build their mathematical and scientific foundations before entering degree-level chemistry.

You will study the full breadth of chemistry, covering organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry alongside analytical techniques and the quantitative methods that chemists apply in professional and research settings. Keele emphasises maximum flexibility to explore the subject's full breadth, from core chemical structure and reactivity through to the role chemistry plays in addressing global economic and environmental challenges. You will have hands-on access to sector-leading laboratory facilities throughout the programme, and professional and practical skills are embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring that your education is directly relevant to the careers you can pursue after graduation.

A typical entry tariff of 72 UCAS points, with the foundation year, reflects an exceptionally inclusive admissions approach. Graduates from chemistry at Keele move into careers in pharmaceuticals, chemical and process industries, materials science, environmental analysis, food and consumer goods, analytical chemistry, teaching, and science communication. Many pursue professional qualifications in chemistry or continue to postgraduate research in chemistry or a related discipline.
