About this course

Chemistry is the central science, concerned with the composition, structure and properties of matter and the reactions that transform one substance into another. When combined with cosmetic science, it takes on a highly applied dimension, bringing the principles of physical chemistry, organic chemistry and formulation science to bear on the creation of skincare products, haircare, fragrance and personal care formulations. This is a discipline where rigorous laboratory science meets an industry worth hundreds of billions of pounds globally, and where chemical knowledge has direct, practical consequences.

At the University of Reading, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation element, which provides a thorough preparation in the underlying sciences before the main degree programme begins. This makes it well suited to students who wish to consolidate their scientific knowledge before tackling the more advanced material. You will study core chemistry, including organic synthesis, physical chemistry, analytical methods and spectroscopy, alongside specialist content in cosmetic formulation, ingredient science and product testing.

The programme develops your laboratory skills, your ability to design and interpret experiments, and your understanding of the regulatory and safety context in which cosmetic products are developed and approved.

Graduates are well placed for careers in the cosmetics and personal care industry, working in product development, formulation, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and technical sales. Pharmaceutical companies, flavour and fragrance houses, and analytical testing laboratories also recruit chemistry graduates with applied specialisms. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in chemistry, cosmetic science or pharmaceutical science, developing their expertise further before moving into research or senior technical roles.

The combination of broad chemical training and industry-relevant specialisation makes this degree distinctive in the job market.
