About this course

Chemistry is the science of matter and its transformations. It asks how atoms and molecules are structured, how they interact, what drives chemical reactions, and how new substances can be synthesised and characterised. It is a discipline that sits at the foundation of most of the technologies and products that define modern life, from medicines and materials to fuels, food and electronics, and it connects intimately with biology, physics, engineering and environmental science.

At the University of Kent this four-year full-time programme includes a year in industry, giving you the opportunity to gain substantial professional experience in a real chemical or related workplace before your final year. You will develop knowledge and practical skills across the core areas of chemistry, including organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, spectroscopic analysis, computational methods and laboratory technique. The programme is animated by the conviction that chemistry has a central role in meeting the challenges of the twenty-first century, from combating climate change and developing energy storage devices to creating new pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

You will engage with questions that connect fundamental scientific knowledge to real-world applications, and the year in industry gives you direct experience of how chemical science is practised professionally.

Chemistry graduates pursue careers in the pharmaceutical, chemical, materials, food, cosmetics, energy and environmental industries. Many work in research and development, quality control, analytical services and product development. Others move into teaching, science communication, patent law, management consulting and finance, where quantitative and analytical skills are valued.

Postgraduate study in chemistry, chemical biology, materials science or related fields is a common pathway for those seeking specialist or research roles.
