Chemistry with a foundation Year

Chemistry is the science of matter at the molecular and atomic level, examining how substances are structured, how they react with each other, and how those reactions can be understood, predicted, and harnessed for practical purposes. It is the central science in a literal sense: chemistry connects physics, which describes the forces governing matter, to biology, which describes living systems built from chemical processes. At Kent this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who would benefit from additional preparation before the main degree. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed to succeed in chemistry at degree level, ensuring you are well equipped for the rigour of the programme that follows. Across the degree you will engage with the fascinating and practically consequential world of chemistry, developing knowledge and practical laboratory skills to address the challenges of the twenty-first century, including combating climate change, creating energy storage devices, developing new pharmaceuticals, and formulating advanced materials.

Chemistry graduates are in sustained demand across a wide range of sectors. The pharmaceutical industry, materials science, chemical engineering, environmental consultancy, energy, food and drink, and forensic science are among the most direct career destinations. The rigorous analytical and quantitative training the degree provides is also valued in finance, data science, and research management.

Many chemistry graduates continue to postgraduate study, whether in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or related fields, or pursue professional qualifications in areas such as patent law or the Royal Society of Chemistry's routes to chartership.
