Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the central sciences, sitting between physics and biology, providing the molecular explanations for the behaviour of matter. It underpins manufacturing, medicine, energy production, materials science, and environmental science, and advances in chemistry are responsible for many of the most significant developments in modern life, from pharmaceuticals and fertilisers to polymers and clean energy technologies. At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme covers the core branches of chemistry including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, alongside practical laboratory training and the quantitative methods that underpin chemical analysis. You will develop skills in experimental design, data interpretation, spectroscopic analysis, and scientific communication, and you will learn to apply chemical principles to problems that matter in industry and in research. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry, giving you a year of professional experience that deepens your understanding of how chemistry is practised outside the laboratory, and a year abroad, which broadens your scientific education and cultural horizons.

Chemistry graduates are among the most employable science graduates, with career paths spanning the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, materials science, environmental consulting, food science, healthcare, and scientific publishing.
