About this course

Chemistry is the science of matter and its transformations. It investigates the composition, structure, and properties of substances and the reactions through which they change, underpinning everything from the development of new medicines and materials to our understanding of the atmosphere and the processes of life itself. As both a fundamental science and a driver of practical innovation, chemistry is central to addressing challenges in health, energy, food, and the environment.

This three-year, full-time programme at the University of Plymouth combines rigorous academic study with a strong emphasis on practical skills and laboratory experience. The programme includes a foundation year, which provides the additional preparation some students need before entering the main degree content, alongside a placement year and a year abroad for those who wish to gain professional experience and an international perspective. You will develop your understanding across the core branches of the discipline, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, while building the practical techniques, data analysis skills, and scientific communication abilities that professional chemists need.

Laboratory work is central to the experience, reflecting the hands-on nature of the discipline.

Chemistry graduates are in demand across a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials science, energy, food and drink, and environmental science. Roles in research and development, quality control, analytical chemistry, and product development are common starting points, and many graduates move into management or specialist scientific roles as their careers develop. The degree also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related fields, and for entry into the chemical professions through registration with the Royal Society of Chemistry.
