Chemistry is the science of matter at the molecular and atomic level, exploring how substances are structured, how they interact, and how energy drives those interactions. It sits at the meeting point of physics, biology, and materials science, which means it underpins everything from the development of new medicines to the design of sustainable materials and the understanding of environmental processes. Studying chemistry trains you to think rigorously about causation and mechanism, to work carefully with experimental evidence, and to connect theoretical models to observable phenomena.

At Nottingham you will build foundations in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry before moving into more specialised territory as the programme progresses. Laboratory work is central throughout, developing practical technique alongside the interpretive skills needed to make sense of experimental data. The course offers considerable flexibility: there is a foundation year for those who need to consolidate prior knowledge before the main programme, a sandwich year for a substantial placement in industry or a research institution, and a year abroad option that allows you to study at a partner university.

Work placement opportunities are integrated into the degree, giving you direct experience of how chemistry is practised professionally. Entry to the programme is typically at around 136 tariff points.

Chemistry graduates are genuinely versatile. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors are significant employers, as are the chemical and materials industries, energy companies, and environmental consultancies. Many graduates move into research and development roles, while others apply their analytical training to careers in finance, patent law, science communication, or teaching.

Postgraduate study, whether a masters by coursework or a research doctorate, is common and opens routes into academic research, specialist industrial roles, and scientific policy.
