About this course

Chemical sciences encompass the study of matter at its most fundamental level, examining the composition, structure, properties and transformations of substances from simple molecules to complex materials. Chemistry sits at the heart of science as a discipline, providing the molecular understanding that underpins biology, medicine, materials science, environmental science and much of physics. It is both a rigorous theoretical enterprise and a deeply practical one, requiring careful experimental work, quantitative reasoning and the ability to connect molecular-level understanding to observable phenomena.

At the University of Liverpool this four-year programme includes a foundation year at Carmel College, providing a structured entry route that builds the mathematical and scientific grounding you need before university-level chemistry begins. From that foundation you progress into the full chemical sciences curriculum, covering organic, inorganic and physical chemistry in depth, with substantial laboratory work running throughout. You will develop skills in synthesis, analysis, spectroscopic characterisation and computational chemistry, alongside the quantitative and problem-solving abilities that the subject demands.
