About this course

Chemical engineering is the discipline that translates chemistry from laboratory experiment to industrial reality, designing and operating the processes through which chemical transformations are carried out at scale, safely, efficiently, and sustainably. At the University of Strathclyde, the MEng or BEng Chemical Engineering runs over four years of full-time study and includes a year abroad, giving you international experience in a discipline that is practised globally. As the current description notes, chemical engineers play a vital role in finding solutions to twenty-first century challenges: providing clean water, developing medicines, producing food, and generating fuel.

The degree develops the foundational engineering sciences: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and reaction engineering are all essential to chemical engineering practice, alongside the mathematics and process modelling tools that allow engineers to design and analyse complex systems. Sustainability is increasingly central to what chemical engineers do, and the programme engages with how processes can be designed to minimise waste, reduce energy consumption, and operate without hazardous materials wherever possible. Design projects develop your ability to apply scientific principles to real engineering challenges, working with the professional codes and standards that govern engineering practice.

The year abroad provides international experience, which is valuable in a discipline where many major employers operate across multiple countries.

Chemical engineering graduates have consistently strong employment outcomes. The process industries, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, specialty chemicals, and water treatment, are major employers, alongside the growing sectors of renewable energy, waste management, and environmental technology. Roles span process design, project engineering, operations management, environmental health and safety, and technical consulting.

The professional formation pathway through the Institution of Chemical Engineers provides a route to chartered status. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in process engineering, sustainable chemistry, biotechnology, or materials.
