Central & East European Studies/Scottish History
Central and East European studies combined with Scottish history is a degree of considerable intellectual reach, pairing the tumultuous political and cultural history of a region that has experienced revolution, occupation, communism, and its aftermath with the distinctive history of Scotland, a nation whose story of union, empire, and evolving identity has its own compelling complexity. Central and East European studies addresses the dramatic changes of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from the collapse of empires and the rise of totalitarian regimes through the fall of communism and the emergence of populism, the Russo-Ukrainian war, and the instabilities of the Caucasus and Central Asia.
At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time degree combines these two fields in a programme taught by researchers who are genuinely expert in their areas. You will chart the key issues in Central and Eastern Europe from the Baltic to the Balkans and from Berlin to Vladivostok, while also developing a deep understanding of Scottish history, its medieval and early modern character, its role in the formation and dissolution of the British Empire, and its contemporary trajectory. A year abroad is integrated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in the region and encounter its history and culture at first hand.
