Celtic Studies/English Language

Celtic Studies is the scholarly engagement with the languages, literatures, histories and cultures of the Celtic peoples of the British Isles and beyond, including Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish, Breton and Manx. These are living languages with rich literary traditions, many of them endangered to varying degrees, and studying them is both an intellectual and a cultural act. The languages themselves are fascinating objects of linguistic analysis, related to each other and distantly to other Indo-European tongues, and the cultures they carry are distinctive, complex and deeply historically rooted.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year MA (Hons) combines Celtic Studies with English Language, a pairing that reflects the deep historical and ongoing interaction between the Celtic languages and English across the British Isles. English Language study at this level is not simply literary analysis but the scientific study of language itself, including phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the study of how language varies across communities and contexts. Together, the two disciplines give you an unusually rich understanding of the linguistic diversity of these islands and of language as a human phenomenon more broadly.

A year abroad is built into the programme, and the Celtic Studies component involves study of languages that extend into Ireland, Scotland, Wales and other countries, meaning international engagement is embedded in the subject itself.

Graduates of Celtic Studies and English Language programmes develop skills in linguistic analysis, historical research, cultural interpretation, and critical writing that are valued in teaching, research, heritage, broadcasting, publishing, and the cultural sector. Many go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, Celtic or Gaelic studies, English language, or related fields. Some pursue careers in language education, minority language policy, or cultural organisations engaged with Celtic heritage and living languages.
