About this course

Cell Biology is the study of the fundamental unit of life. Every living organism, from a single-celled bacterium to a human being, is built from cells, and understanding how those cells are structured, how they carry out their biochemical functions, and how they interact with one another is the basis for understanding biology and medicine at the most fundamental level. Cell biologists investigate the molecular machinery of the cell, including proteins, membranes, organelles, the nucleus, and the genetic material, as well as the processes of cell division, signalling, development, and disease.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting the international character of modern biological science. You will study the molecular structures and biochemical processes essential to cell function, developing a deep understanding of how animal, plant, and microbial cells are built and how they work. The programme examines how cells interact to form tissues and organisms, providing the foundations for understanding physiology, development, and pathology.
