Business studies is the systematic examination of how organisations are created, managed and sustained in a world of competing resources, changing markets and uncertain futures. It encompasses strategy, finance, marketing, operations, human resources, entrepreneurship and the analytical frameworks that help managers make better decisions under pressure. Studying business is not simply a vocational preparation for employment in a company; at its best it develops a rigorous, questioning and adaptable approach to understanding how collective human endeavour is organised and what makes it succeed or fail.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, studied part-time, you will engage with the core disciplines of business while also engaging with the particular economic and social context of Scotland, the Highlands and the island communities that UHI serves. Small and medium enterprises, rural business, social enterprise and the specific challenges and opportunities of doing business in geographically remote communities are realities that give the programme a grounding in contexts that larger business schools often overlook. You will develop analytical skills, practical business knowledge and the ability to apply frameworks to real organisational challenges, developing the kind of thinking that is useful whether you are managing an existing business, starting a new one or working within a large organisation.

Graduates of business programmes work across virtually every sector and type of organisation. General management, marketing, finance, HR, operations and entrepreneurship are among the most common career directions, and the breadth of the degree means graduates can pivot between functions and industries as their careers develop. Many graduates start or build existing businesses.

Some go on to postgraduate study in business, management, entrepreneurship or a specialist functional area, and professional qualifications in areas such as accountancy, marketing or human resources are common alongside early career roles.
