About this course

Business as a field of study draws on economics, psychology, sociology, law, and quantitative analysis to understand how organisations create, deliver, and capture value. The University of Portsmouth offers a two-year full-time Business programme that provides a solid grounding in the core disciplines of the subject, with a year abroad available to broaden your perspective and develop your adaptability in an international context. This programme is designed as a stepping stone, and on completion you can progress to the final year of selected Business, Finance, or Marketing degrees at Portsmouth's main campus, allowing you to build towards a full undergraduate qualification.

During your studies you will explore the key functions and processes that shape how organisations operate: strategy, marketing, finance, operations, and human resource management, as well as the wider economic and regulatory environments in which businesses work. The programme develops your ability to analyse business situations, apply established frameworks, and communicate recommendations clearly. Business education at this level places a strong emphasis on practical and applied thinking: you will work with real-world case material and develop the kind of rounded understanding that employers and further study programmes look for.

The year abroad offers the chance to study in a different business and cultural environment, which is increasingly valuable as organisations operate across borders.

Graduates who complete the full degree pathway are well prepared for a broad range of careers. Business and management graduates work in almost every sector of the economy, including finance, retail, technology, healthcare, the public sector, and the creative industries, in roles spanning marketing, operations, consulting, human resources, and general management. Many choose to specialise further through professional qualifications or postgraduate study, including master's degrees in business administration, finance, marketing, or related fields.

The analytical, communication, and organisational skills developed throughout the programme are broadly applicable and provide a sound foundation for a working life that may involve several different sectors and functions.

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: case-based teaching forces you to think commercially. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant studen…

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the consulting projects with real companies genuinely prepare you for the working world. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good tran…
