About this course

Innovation and entrepreneurship represent two of the most significant forces shaping how organisations and economies evolve. Innovation is the process by which new ideas, technologies, and ways of doing things are generated and brought into practice, while entrepreneurship is the activity of creating, launching, and growing new ventures or transforming existing organisations to seize new opportunities. Together, they define the conditions under which businesses survive and prosper in rapidly changing markets, making them among the most important areas of business education for graduates who want to create change rather than simply respond to it.

At Birkbeck College, this four-year full-time BSc develops skills at the intersection of business management, technology, creativity, and leadership. You will gain a grounding in the key functions of business, including operations, marketing, finance, and human resource management, understanding how organisations are structured and how management contributes to performance. The innovation and entrepreneurship specialisation builds on this foundation, examining how new ideas are developed, tested, and scaled, how digital transformation is managed within established organisations, and how new ventures are conceived and launched.

The degree also incorporates a placement year, giving you direct professional experience in an applied business context and the opportunity to put your learning to work in a real organisation.

Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers, both within established organisations and in the start-up and scale-up world. Roles in innovation management, new product development, corporate venturing, strategy consulting, business development, and technology-enabled service design all draw directly on the degree's core themes. Many graduates launch their own ventures, informed by the practical and conceptual tools the programme provides.

Others move into careers in management consultancy, marketing, financial services, and the public sector, where the combination of business acumen and creative problem-solving is consistently valued. Postgraduate study in entrepreneurship, innovation, business administration, or technology management is also a natural next step for those seeking further specialist qualification.

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the careers office is relentless about getting you internships. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links m…

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the accounting and finance streams are taught by practitioners, not just academics. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship …
