Business Management with Human Resource Management
People are the most important asset any organisation has, and human resource management is the discipline that takes that claim seriously. It covers the full range of activities through which organisations attract, develop, manage and retain their workforce, from recruitment and training to performance management, employment law, reward systems and organisational development. Combining HRM with business management means you understand both the strategic and operational dimensions of running organisations, and can see how people decisions connect to financial performance, culture and long-term competitiveness.
At the University of Hull this programme runs over four years of full-time study, incorporating a study abroad element that broadens your perspective on how organisations manage their people across different national contexts and employment cultures. You will explore motivation and behaviour, employment relations, equality and diversity, leadership, change management and strategic people management alongside core business topics including finance, marketing, operations and strategy. The course builds your ability to think critically about how organisations function and how management practice shapes the working lives of real people.
HRM and business management graduates work across virtually every sector, because every organisation employs people and needs professionals who understand how to manage that effectively. Common routes include HR management, talent acquisition, learning and development, organisational development, employment relations and compensation and benefits. Many graduates enter graduate trainee schemes in large organisations, or move into consultancy roles working with multiple clients on people and culture challenges.
Others pursue postgraduate study in HR, organisational psychology or MBA programmes, or move into general management roles where their understanding of people and business provides a well-rounded foundation. The breadth of this discipline means that career paths remain genuinely open at graduation.
