About this course

People are the most important resource in any organisation, and the discipline of human resource management is built around understanding how to attract, develop, motivate, and retain them. HRM sits at the intersection of psychology, organisational behaviour, employment law, and business strategy, drawing on all of these to help organisations build workforces that are both capable and engaged. Studying it alongside business management gives you the strategic and operational breadth to understand organisations as a whole, while developing the specific expertise in people management that employers across every sector value.

At Hull, this four-year programme with a placement year combines a solid grounding in business management, covering strategy, marketing, finance, and operations, with specialist knowledge in HRM, including recruitment and selection, learning and development, employment relations, reward management, and the legal frameworks governing employment. The placement year gives you a full year of professional experience in a business or HR environment, allowing you to apply your learning in practice and to develop the professional skills and networks that significantly improve your employability on graduation.

Graduates are well placed for careers in human resources, people management, and general management across all sectors of the economy. Many pursue Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualifications alongside or after their degree, adding professional recognition to their academic credential. Roles in HR management, talent development, organisational design, employee relations, and business partnering are natural destinations.

The combination of broad business knowledge and HR specialism is particularly valued in organisations that want HR professionals who understand the commercial context in which people management decisions are made. Postgraduate study in HRM, organisational behaviour, or business administration is also an option.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brillia…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: case-based teaching forces you to think commercially. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of l…
