About this course

Business management is a discipline that asks how organisations work and how they can be led more effectively. But the most interesting approaches to that question go beyond the mechanics of strategy and operations to draw on economics, social science, and historical analysis, recognising that businesses exist in social and political contexts that shape what they can do and what they should do. A management degree grounded in these broader disciplines develops graduates who can think differently about business and contribute to organisational change with a depth of understanding that narrower training cannot provide.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time degree deliberately draws from economics, history, and the social sciences, offering an interdisciplinary approach that sets it apart from many comparable programmes. You will study the foundations of management, including strategy, finance, marketing, and operations, but you will do so alongside material that contextualises business in its historical development, its economic environment, and its social and ethical dimensions. A placement or work experience year is built into the programme, and a year abroad is also available, both of which add substantive professional and international experience to your academic studies.

You will develop commercial awareness, analytical rigour, and the capacity for critical thinking about organisations and the broader environments in which they operate. The interdisciplinary approach produces graduates who are not simply technically competent but genuinely able to question assumptions and think about business in original ways.

Graduates work across a wide range of management and commercial roles in business, the public sector, consultancy, finance, marketing, and social enterprise. The breadth of the degree means that career paths are diverse, and the combination of academic depth and practical experience from the placement year supports strong employability. Postgraduate study in business administration, management, or a specialist business discipline is an option for those who want to develop further expertise.

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the …

Genuinely worthwhile
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of liv…
