About this course

Business management is the discipline concerned with how organisations are planned, directed, and developed to achieve their goals. It draws on economics, finance, marketing, operations, strategy, human resources, and organisational behaviour to give students a broad understanding of commercial life. The extended degree format stretches the programme to four years, providing more time to develop depth in each of these areas while incorporating the practical and international experience that makes graduates distinctive in the job market.

At Northumbria University, this four-year programme includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and a work placement component, meaning that a significant portion of your time as a student is spent in professional and international settings rather than purely in the classroom. You will develop analytical, strategic, and practical skills across the full range of management disciplines, and you will learn to apply those skills in real contexts during your placement. Northumbria's strong industry connections mean placements are well supported, and the year abroad gives you the cross-cultural perspective that employers in global organisations find valuable.

Graduates of business management programmes enter careers across virtually every sector. Graduate management schemes, roles in marketing, operations, finance, human resources, consultancy, and entrepreneurship are all common destinations. The breadth of the degree is one of its greatest assets, as it prepares you to operate in generalist roles and to specialise as your career develops.

Further study in business, management, finance, or a specialist field is open to graduates who wish to deepen their expertise or move into postgraduate professional qualifications.
