About this course

Business management and economics is a pairing that addresses two of the most central questions in professional and public life: how are organisations led and how do economies function? Management provides the strategic, operational and human dimensions of how enterprises are run, including finance, marketing, human resources, operations and leadership. Economics provides the analytical tools to understand markets, behaviour, growth, trade and policy, situating management decisions in the broader economic context in which they are made.

The combination is particularly well suited to careers that span the public and private sectors.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting the international dimensions of both business and economic life. The programme is described as a perfect partnership for careers in business or the public sector, providing wide knowledge and skills in management, people and organisations in a fast-moving global environment. Aberdeen's location in the heart of Scotland's energy sector provides a distinctive industrial and commercial context for business and economic learning.

You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics, quantitative methods, marketing, finance, strategy, organisational behaviour and human resource management, developing both the analytical skills to understand economic phenomena and the practical knowledge to manage organisations effectively. The year abroad broadens your perspective on how different national economies and business cultures operate.

Graduates go on to careers in business management, economic analysis, financial services, consultancy, the civil service, international organisations, policy research, public administration and the private sector across all industries. The breadth of the combination and the year abroad make graduates competitive for a wide range of employers. Further study in business, economics or public policy is a natural option for those who want to develop deeper expertise.
