About this course

Business computing is a discipline that sits at the intersection of information technology and commercial practice, concerned with how organisations use digital systems to operate, communicate, make decisions and create value. It encompasses information systems, software development, database management, data analysis, project management and the broader understanding of how technology shapes and is shaped by business needs. As organisations in every sector have become dependent on digital infrastructure, the ability to understand both the technical and commercial dimensions of that infrastructure has become a consistently valued professional skill.

At Brunel University London this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which builds the mathematical, technical and business foundations you need before the main degree begins. Across the full programme you will develop hands-on experience alongside theoretical understanding, learning how to determine the processes and systems that allow organisations to carry out business effectively and efficiently, and how those systems need to adapt as organisations grow, change and face new challenges. The emphasis on real-world practice means you graduate ready to contribute from the start of your professional life.

Business computing graduates work in roles across virtually every industry, including business analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager, data analyst, software developer, digital transformation manager and IT consultant. The combination of technical understanding and commercial awareness is valued by technology companies, financial services firms, consulting organisations, public sector bodies and any organisation that needs people who can bridge the gap between IT capability and business need. Postgraduate study in information management, business analytics or digital innovation is a natural further route.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the ci…
