About this course

Business analytics is the discipline of using data and quantitative methods to understand how businesses perform and to support better decision-making. It draws on statistics, data science, operational research, and business management, applying analytical tools to the kinds of questions that organisations face every day: what is driving customer behaviour, where is operational efficiency being lost, what do sales trends predict, and where should investment be directed. As the volume of business data has grown and the tools for analysing it have become more accessible, the demand for people who can bridge the gap between data and decision has expanded substantially.

At Birkbeck College in London, this three-year full-time programme equips you with both the core skills of business analytics and the understanding of business context that makes those skills genuinely useful. You will study statistics and data analysis, programming and data tools, machine learning, database management, financial analysis, and the communication of analytical findings to non-technical stakeholders. The programme focuses on practical applications, ensuring that what you learn is grounded in real business problems and that you graduate with the ability to apply analytics in professional settings from the outset.

Business analytics graduates work in roles such as business analyst, data analyst, operations analyst, financial analyst, and consultant in organisations across retail, financial services, healthcare, logistics, technology, and the public sector. The combination of quantitative skills and business understanding makes graduates valuable wherever data is available but not yet being used effectively to guide decisions. Postgraduate study in business analytics, data science, and management science is available for those who wish to deepen their expertise, and the practical orientation of the degree at Birkbeck means graduates are often well prepared to move quickly into professional roles.
