Bulgarian and Hebrew

Bulgarian and Hebrew is a language combination that connects two rich and historically significant traditions: a Slavic language of the Balkan Peninsula with deep roots in Orthodox Christian culture and a complex Balkan history, and a Semitic language that is both the ancient tongue of the Hebrew Bible and the modern spoken language of Israel. Studying them together at UCL gives you access to two very different linguistic and cultural worlds, developing the kind of comparative linguistic awareness that few other combinations can match.

This four-year full-time programme at University College London is taught within one of the UK's leading modern languages departments. You will develop proficiency in both Bulgarian and Hebrew, studying grammar, spoken and written communication, and the literary, cultural, and historical contexts of each language. Bulgarian opens access to the Slavic literary tradition, to Balkan history and politics, and to the culture of a country whose EU membership makes it part of contemporary European affairs in ways that receive relatively little attention in the UK.

Hebrew opens access to one of the most studied bodies of literature in human history, to the history of the Jewish people, and to the contemporary society of Israel and the wider Middle East. UCL's resources in both languages are strong, and London's diverse communities provide additional contexts for both.

Graduates from this programme pursue careers in translation and interpretation, international organisations, journalism, diplomacy, academic research, and cultural institutions. The Hebrew element is particularly valued in organisations working on Middle Eastern affairs, Jewish community organisations, and research institutions focused on the region. The Bulgarian element connects graduates to opportunities in Balkan studies, EU affairs, and Eastern European business and culture.
