Bulgarian and Czech

Bulgarian and Czech are two Slavic languages that open access to two distinct but related cultural and intellectual worlds: Bulgaria, a Balkan nation with a history stretching from the medieval Bulgarian empires through Ottoman rule to its modern role as an EU member state, and the Czech Republic, a central European country with one of the richest literary and artistic traditions in the region, producing writers from Kafka to Kundera and thinkers whose influence extends well beyond their national borders. Both languages use different scripts from English, Bulgarian in Cyrillic and Czech in a Latin script with distinctive diacritics, and learning both develops exceptional linguistic agility.

At UCL, which has one of the most comprehensive East European studies programmes in the UK, this four-year programme develops both languages to a high level while engaging you with the histories, literatures and cultures of Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. You will study language, literature, cultural history and area studies in both traditions, developing the ability to read, write and speak in both Bulgarian and Czech, and situating those linguistic skills within a deep understanding of the societies in which the languages are used. UCL's scholarly strengths in Slavic and East European studies provide an excellent academic environment for this rare combination.

The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates move into careers in diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, NGO work, academic research, cultural organisations, the European Union and its institutions, business in central and eastern Europe, and consultancy. Knowledge of less-commonly taught European languages is particularly valued in diplomatic, intelligence and international business contexts where specialists are scarce. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Slavic studies, area studies, translation, linguistics or international relations.
