About this course

Bioscience with management occupies the growing space between scientific expertise and business capability, preparing graduates to work in organisations where understanding biological science and managing people, projects, and strategies are equally important. The life sciences industry, which includes pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, medical device manufacturers, and contract research organisations, increasingly needs professionals who can bridge the gap between laboratory science and commercial operation. A degree that develops both dimensions prepares you to contribute in this interface in a way that pure science or pure business training alone cannot.

At Birkbeck College in London, this part-time degree is delivered in the evening, making it accessible to students who are working or have other daytime commitments. The bioscience component covers the fundamental knowledge and applications of modern biological science, including cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and the biological principles underlying health and disease. The management component develops your understanding of organisations, strategy, finance, and the key disciplines of business leadership.

Together these strands are designed to prepare you for roles at the interface of scientific and business careers, where the ability to understand both the science and the commercial context is a genuine advantage.

You will develop scientific literacy alongside managerial understanding, the ability to read primary research literature and the capacity to plan and evaluate business strategy. These dual competencies are rare and specifically sought by life sciences employers.

Graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research organisations, regulatory affairs, science consultancy, health technology companies, and life sciences business development. The management element also supports progression into project management, team leadership, and general management roles within scientific organisations. Postgraduate study in life sciences management, biomedical science, or business administration is an option for those who want to develop specialist expertise further.

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the careers office is relentless about getting you internships. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links…
