About this course

Biomedicine and health science sits at the interface between biological research and the development of new clinical therapies. It encompasses the basic life sciences, including cell biology, genetics and biochemistry, alongside the applied sciences of pharmacology, immunology and biotechnology, asking both how the body works and how that understanding can be translated into treatments for disease. As the biotechnology revolution continues to transform medicine, from gene therapies and cell-based treatments to targeted biologics and precision medicine, the need for graduates who understand both the science and the health context has grown considerably.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year in professional placement and a work placement, providing a supported entry route and substantial industry experience. You will develop a sound understanding of the fundamental life sciences alongside an appreciation of how novel therapies are developed, from early laboratory research through clinical translation to patient delivery. The programme covers both non-pharmacological and biotechnology-dependent interventions, including therapies based on recombinant DNA technology, modified cellular approaches and bespoke personalised treatments.

The placements give you direct experience of how biomedical science operates in research, clinical or industry settings.
